Seriously, that can't be right. Using oil to clean oil spatters doesn't seem to make sense, so I had to try it out. In some strange way, it works! Now, it does not even begin to clean food chunks or spatters that are cooked on, but that general "film" you get on your stove hood (in my case it's the bottom of my microwave) and the back console of your stove/oven comes right off! Just take a paper towel and put a couple drops of oil on it. The original blogger recommends mineral oil, but any vegetable oil will work, too. I used canola oil. Wipe over the surface and the gunk comes right off. I think what this does best is remove the layer of dust that builds up on the bottom layer of grease sitting on the stove. Then wipe again with a clean paper towel to remove any excess oil. You are left with a shiny, clean surface that will even repel dust and make cleaning easier later (in theory).
