My constant need for creative substitutions is starting to crack me up. I never seem to have all the ingredients on hand for a recipe, or all the supplies needed for a DIY project. But instead of waiting to try it another day, I forge ahead, using whatever I have that's close enough to the original! I saw this pin recommending using lemon juice to remove rust spots from knives. In her picture, there's a large bottle of lemon juice and a cup with all her knives happily soaking away. Of course, I didn't have a large bottle of lemon juice, but I was going to try this today anyway! My lemon juice looks like the one pictured above: a mini plastic lemon with about 3 tablespoons of juice left in it. But not to be deterred, I chose my smallest paring knife and tried to fill a tiny juice cup with enough to cover the blade. Nope, not enough. So I found a small cake plate with a bit of a bowl in the center. However, the knife was too long, and it couldn't lie flat in the center. I then found a baby plate with edges all around to help keep the lemon juice from running off the plate. Voila! I found something big enough for the knife and shallow enough to make my tiny amount of lemon juice just cover the blade. It has been soaking now for about 5 minutes, so I'm going to go try to scrub off the rust (which wouldn't be there in the first place if I hand washed my knives, but really, who has time for that?)
What do you know? It works like a charm! I just wiped the knife with the scrubby side of my sponge and it came clean with one pass. I think I'll have to invest in a large bottle of lemon juice. Now, does anyone know how I can get the juice back into my plastic lemon? :)
