Day 251: How to Clean a Fake Plant

I happened to glance up while standing in my kitchen today and I saw what used to be a fake plant adding color above my kitchen cabinets.  I say "used to be" because it's now something you would find in a haunted house.  Every leaf is covered in dust and some of them have long chains of dust bunnies clinging to one another as they make their way down towards my kitchen counters.  OK, they aren't that long, but seriously, I am ashamed.  I have abandoned my niches to the dust bunnies and their ever multiplying hoards.

In an attempt to gain back the high ground, I went searching Pinterest for a better way to clean and conquer.  Believe it or not, I have taken these down and cleaned them a few times since living here.  There are others in the house I haven't even touched and they don't look like they are plotting a coup any time soon.  So why are the ones in the kitchen so gross?  It must be the oil in the air from cooking.  I don't know.  I just know something must be done.

How to clean fake plants and flowers
I found a pin suggesting hair spray of all things to "clean" the plant and  make it shiny.  I see how it would make it shiny, but clean?  I took one of my less offensive plants and sprayed it up and down with Rave.  I actually used up the rest of the can and it wasn't enough to give the plant a good covering.  So now I have a plant that looks like it has leprosy.  I don't think it really works all that well.  Maybe if you actually clean them more than once a year, this would be a good method.

I also found a pin that suggests what I would actually do, and I know works. Good old-fashioned soap and water.  Well, detergent. It's just more time intensive.  Sigh.  No quick fix for this one.  I do like this post, though, because it also tells you how to clean actual silk plants, since you can't use water for those.  (I'm pretty sure all of mine are just plain old plastic, so no worries here.)

So tomorrow, the fight to retake the kitchen continues.  I'll let you know who comes out the victor.
