Day 194: Removing Sticky Label Residue

My current "teacher gift" project is turning into quite the Pinterest/Blog bonanza!  I love when I can get several days worth of material out of one idea.  For my gift, I needed to use a couple dozen baby food jars that I saved up when Charlie was still willing to eat that mush.  The labels come off quite easily, except for that last strip of glue.  I scrubbed under hot water, but that just melted the glue and made it goopy.  Then I pulled out rubbing alcohol and nail polish remover.  Neither one of those did much good at all.  Finally, I told myself, "You KNOW there will be at least 100 different ways on Pinterest to deal with this very thing.  Just get out your phone and look, for goodness' sake!"  So I did.
I saw a few ideas that were out there- soak in peanut butter for several hours? Who has the time, or the extra peanut butter?  But the recurring theme was oil.  If you can think of an oil variety, I'm sure it was represented.  I went with your basic Canola oil, since I had that.  Sure enough, when you put some on a paper towel and then scrub a little, it wipes right off!  After a few jars, I switched to Orange oil, because that smells better and I didn't want to use up my cooking oil.  I only use the orange oil to clean my cabinets once in a blue moon. (Note to self: this chore really needs to be done soon-preferable before having company this weekend.  Get on it.)  Anyway, the orange oil also worked quite well.  I ran a soapy sponge over the jars afterwards to remove and oil residue.  Voila! Repurposed, homemade, inexpensive gifts for some special people. Tomorrow I may get around to posting about the actual project :)
